Description:
Using specially bred polar dogs we follow the ancient tracks of Sami reindeer herders across the vast highlands of Northern Scandinavia. Sledging with dogs is unique experience, always offering new sights, sounds and sensations; and enthusiasm of the dogs, their hunger to travel is insatiable and very infectious.
Every participant will lead his/her own team of four to six dogs, and travelling across a scenic winter landscape our Norwegian dog handler will teach you the secrets of dog sledging. We travel across the vast highlands, lakes and rivers, through Europe´s last remaining wilderness and we have a good chance of spotting reindeer, wolverine and moose.
At this time of year we can see magnificent displays of the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights, forming beautifully colored arcs and shimmering curtains of light.
The temperatures are truly polar but we stay overnight in comfortable and warm cabins, sampling the delicious Arctic cuisine of local products such as moose, reindeer and salmon.
Day 1 till Day 8
Day 1:
We meet you at Bardufoss Airport and drive to the lodge. Dinner and planning of the week. We will say hello to our four legged friends. And if there is time we go for a short training trip with the dogs.
Day 2:
We pack dogs and equipment on the truck and drive for 40 min to the starting point of the trip. Here we pack our sleds, everyone has their own team of dogs and sled where they pack their personal equipment and some part of the group equipment. After a short introduction we head out to the wilderness.
Day 2 to 7:
We explore the mountain areas of Dividalen National park and the border mountain range between Norway and Sweden. Roughly we will cover 40 to 80 km pr day. We spend the nights in mountain cabins, and maybe some night in tents.
What we do from day to day will depend on weather and snow conditions. During the week we will travel through untouched wilderness and most of the time brake our own trails. We will cross high mountain plateaus, valleys with mountain birches and big lakes.
The area is used by the sami people for over thousands of years and we will learn more about this interesting culture.
On the December trip we only have four hours of daylight so it will be many interesting moments under bright stars and northern light.
